Cupping is a form of therapy that uses suction to promote blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, and more. Though cupping is a traditional practice that has been practiced for centuries, it became popularized when Michael Phelps had circular cupping marks while swimming at the Olympics. So what are the benefits and side effects of cupping?

Some of the benefits of cupping therapy include:

  • Helping to facilitate the flow of “qi” in the body

  • Increased blood circulation which relieves muscles tension and promotes cell repair

  • Releases build-up toxin in the lymphatic system

  • Clearing congestion which can bring greater amounts of oxygen rich blood to the rest of the body

Some side effects of cupping therapy include:

  • Cupping bruises that can last from a few days up to two weeks

  • Mild soreness and skin infections may occur in the areas of the cupping

  • People who are taking anticoagulants or have hemophilia are not suggested to undergo cupping therapy as they may be expose to excess bleeding

  • People with eczema may experience greater skin irritation with cupping therapy
