Spring 2023// Week 8: Reiki

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Marla Mervis-Hartmann is the empowering force behind Love Your Body, Love Yourself. After overcoming her own struggles with food, exercise, and body confidence, Marla now shares her transformative journey and offers Body-Love Reiki Circles at Ai Pono. She was known as the leading body image expert at Journey Malibu. Her mission is to inspire women to embrace self-compassion and pursue the lives they desire. In the workshop, instead of giving us a presentation on what Reiki is, Marla fully immersed us in the experience to show us the power of Reiki. Before doing so, Marla gave an overview of Reiki and described it as the practice of giving to ourselves as well as giving to others. She refers to Reiki as an "unconditional healing energy" or an "energy of unconditional love" that one can utilize as it is always moving in the world around us. Marla notes that this healing energy has the power to help with emotional, physical, and spiritual pain, as it sheds light on the pain intertwined in these three pillars of one's well-being. Marla also mentions that by practicing Reiki, one can learn not only to change one's internal well-being that drives one closer to their "truth," but also to heal others as one becomes a practitioner. Nonetheless, Marla makes an important point that practicing Reiki and obtaining its benefits is like putting money in a savings account. The results and benefits may take some people longer than others to feel. After giving us this wonderful overview, Marla proceeded to immerse us in the experience through Zoom, as practicing Reiki is possible over long distances as well. She had every individual in the Zoom group pass the Reiki energy while guiding the group through a Reiki meditation to help visualize the Reiki energy throughout our bodies. This meditation lasted for 10 minutes, and after a pause to give an overview of Reiki, it continued for another 30 minutes. After the Reiki workshop, the people in the group vocalized their experience as "calming," "de-stressing," and even "refueling."
