Mindful Eating

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

What is mindful eating?

Based on mindfulness meditation, a well-known Buddhist practice, mindful eating is the practice of being fully present and aware of your eating experiences as well as your feelings and thoughts on food. While eating a meal, mindfulness can make you aware when you’ve had enough to eat, not only because you are more attentive to feelings of fullness but also more aware of the food’s flavor.

Why should one practice mindful eating?

  • Helps cut down on food cravings

  • May help lower cortisol levels, blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels

  • Teaches how to eat for true hunger satisfaction and not emotional reasons

  • It’s not a restrictive diet, rather a practice to make you more aware of your eating habits!

What are ways to practice mindful eating?

  • Eliminate or minimize distractions at meal times

  • Don’t eat while driving or standing

  • Pay attention to the ambience around you

  • Notice the flavors, smell, and texture of your food

  • Truly listen to your body’s cues of hunger and fullness

    • Don’t worry about always having a clean plate: it’s ok to leave some for later

What are other practices that you should do to support mindful eating?

  • Reduce your stress

  • Move regularly!

  • Practice yoga

  • Eat with people: studies show that isolated eating increases risk for binge eating and other unhealthy habits
