Fall 2022// Week 3: Feng Shui with Francoise Courty-Dan

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

For our 3rd general meeting workshop, we invited Francoise Courty-Dan to come and speak with SIM about Feng Shui. Francoise Courty-Dan is a certified classical and traditional Chinese Feng Shui Consultant who has founded the One World Feng Shui agency.

During this workshop, Francoise Courty-Dan went over a wide range of topics, such as the brief history, basic principles, and tips on assessing and improving Feng Shui in our homes.

Feng Shui, or “wind water” (wind = direction and water = energy) focuses on the interconnectedness of the energy of the universe and its flow between the environment and all living things. Feng Shui was originally called Kan Yu (or The Study of Heavens and Earth) and was mainly utilized by the higher-ups or officials of society. However, nearing closer to the present aspects of Feng Shui began making its way slowly into the lives of the common people. In the 1960s, after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, Feng Shui began to find its way into the Western world.

Francoise Courty-Dan explained that Feng Shui focuses on Chi or energy, which is sometimes called the life force of the universe. There is both positive chi (Sheng Chi) and negative chi (Sha chi). And by balancing Yin and Yang elements, Feng Shui focuses on fostering positive chi while also maintaining balance among the 5 elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood).

She also gave many examples on how to utilize Feng Shui to improve the energy and atmosphere in our homes! For example, in the kitchen, it is best to keep everything clean and clutter-free. It is also best to keep the stove and sink away from each other and to avoid having the kitchen in the centre of a home. This is to help maintain and balance the Yang energy (with the fire and the energy/activeness of cooking) that a kitchen emanates. For the bedroom, it is good to have a bright and airy room with the bed and headboard against the wall. It is also recommended that the bedroom be square or rectangular shaped. This is to help foster Yin energy (to encourage calmness and a quiet environment). However, it is important to remember that Feng Shui emphasizes interconnectedness and balance of energy. Therefore, too much Yin or Yang energy is not good.
