Fall 2021 // Week 5: SIM Alumni Panel

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

This week, we welcomed Carly Martin, Nina Mokhtarzada, Sophia Inaba, and Wenting Hu, four previous officers of SIM who shared about their undergraduate experience, post-undergraduate experience, and current career paths. We were so happy to hear what they had to say!

  • Carly Martin graduated from UCLA in 2018 and is currently in her second year of naturopathic medical school.

  • Nina Mokhtarzada graduated from UCLA in 2017 and is currently in her last year of physical therapy school.

  • Sophia Inaba graduated from UCLA in 2019 and is currently a music therapist-in-training.

  • Wenting Hu graduated from UCLA in 2021 and is currently working as a scribe and applying for medical school during her gap year.

Here is some of the advice that our alumni left us with:

“Don’t worry about what other people are doing” - Carly

“Explore and keep an open mind, especially with your career paths” - Nina

“Find clarity in your body, advocate for yourself and focus on what you're passionate about.” - Sophia

“Utilize the resources on campus, especially the Wooden Center and going to sports games! ... Calm down and remind yourself you’re going to be ok... Get to know your professors!” - Wenting

How did you get to where you are now?

“Shadow people in your profession and knit-pick them by asking lots of questions!” -Nina

For aspiring music therapists: “Be involved with music and know what YOUR music is and how you use it for yourself.” - Sophia

“When applying for medical school, talk about any experience that matters to you! Anything will count towards expressing who you are.” - Wenting

“Reach out and get coffee with other people in the profession near your area!” - Carly
