Fall 2021 // Week 1: Welcome to SIM!

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

To kick off the school year, we had our first in-person meeting to introduce our 2021-2022 officer board and share what SIM has planned for this year! We also explored the principles and techniques of integrative medicine. Here is a short intro into what integrative medicine is:

Integrative Medicine (IM) is the practice of medicine that combines allopathic medicine with Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for which there is evidence for safety and effectiveness.

Allopathic medicine is what is widely recognized as “modern medicine.” This includes the use of medicines or procedures that oppose or suppress the symptoms of a disease. CAM, on the other hand, is often known as natural or “holistic medicine.” CAM includes a wide range of practices -- including whole medical systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, and Ayurvedic Medicine; mind-body medicine such as Yoga, meditation, and music therapy; biologically-based practices such as herbal medicine, natural food products, and vitamins; manipulative and body-based practices such as chiropractic treatment, osteopathic manipulation, and massage therapy; and energy therapies including reflexology, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Reiki.

The goal of Integrative Medicine is to safely and appropriately merge the strengths of modern biomedicine with the strengths of whole-person healing in order to bring optimal care to patients and advance healthcare.

Here at SIM, we encourage students to learn different medical methods and ideologies from different cultures. This year, we will be inviting guest speakers from all areas of integrative medicine, from nutrition to psychiatry to Ayurveda. By joining SIM, you can expand your horizons in the medical field and network with various IM professionals in the area!

We hope you can join us on Thursdays for future meetings!
